New generation of the soft starter and braking equipment combination VersiComb II Safe: thermal protection for the motor and more flexible installation for a great number of IE1 to IE3 motors

Starting right now, PETER electronic is offering a new generation of its successful two-in-one solution VersiComb II Safe, combining the soft, current-saving start-up with gentle, secure slowing-down of three-phase induction motors of the efficiency classes IE1 to IE3. The core function of the compact unit is the combination of soft starter and direct-current brake which, as well as a soft switch-on moment to care for the components, guarantees security with the run-out of the connected motors. Both in the start process and braking process, the motors are monitored and controlled exactly at all times. Included among the innovations of the well-proven motor starting-braking combination are thermal protection for the motor and device protection, which guarantees increased security and predestines VersiComb II Safe for additional applications. Furthermore, the compact devices up to 37 A are optionally available with adapters to provide for standard-rail fixing: This simplifies installation, in particular if the device combination should be accommodated directly in the switchgear cabinet – especially for OEM (Original Equipment Manuf.) manufacturers this means more flexibility with the upgrade of their machines. In case of desired standard-rail fixing, the device can be pressed very simply onto the rail in the switchgear cabinet, thus dispensing with the work-intensive bolted connection to the mounting plate. And last but not least, the new generation includes a version for supply voltages from 230V to 480V, which extends their employment outside of Germany and Europe, and especially to the North American region.

Soft starter and direct-current brake with thermal overload protection function

VersiComb Safe II was designed for employment on motors of (wood) processing machines, such as saws, milling machines, planes, brushes and grinding machines, or further machines in industry and building equipment, such as vibrators, fans, screening machines and centrifuges.

As an update to the first generation of its VersiComb II Safe series, PETER electronic now additionally integrates a thermal overload protection.

In case of the device series VersiComb II Safe, the type of the motor overload identification can be adjusted over the system parameter "Motor temperature monitoring". By means of sensors and a thermal device image, a device protection is always guaranteed. The device combination of soft starter and direct-current brake can be connected with a motor temperature switch, a motor PTC, a motor KTY84 or also a PT1000. A thermal overload protection for the motor is also integrated, which is activated ex works for motor temperature monitoring. With a current transformer, the motor current is recorded and a thermal image of the motor calculated. This enables the simulation of the thermal protection of a motor protection switch. Load unbalances and ground faults are not monitored.
Furthermore, a device protection is also included in the VersiComb II Safe. The cooling-element and device internal temperature is monitored. A thermal device overload protection is also integrated.

Smart soft starter and controlled direct-current brake, thanks to intelligent on-board functions

As well as thermal protection for the motor and device protection function, the CAN interfaces enable further communication settings and intelligent adaptations for motor start, soft start-up and braking: for example, the parameters for the ideal start-up with voltage ramp can be adjusted individually over CAN bus. The factory-defined start with current limit and boost defined by the manufacturer can be parameterised customer-specific in addition. Thanks to intelligent on-board functions, VersiComb II Safe controls electrical data of the connected motor and, using this, co-ordinates the optimum starting and braking-time or the required braking current of the direct-current brake.

Important characteristics in overview:

VersiComb II Safe is designed for asynchronous motors with rated motor powers of 5 to 30 kW and/or 12 to 60 A device rated current. The soft start-up and braking-equipment combination is available in two housing sizes and 5 variants. The devices meet the specifications of DIN EN 12750:2013 (safety of wood processing machines) and for this are equipped with the following functions:

  • Prevention of an unintentional, fault-dependent start-up
  • Monitored, controlled shutting down
  • Door locking control activation
  • External standstill monitoring
  • Ramp-up identification
